Reading’s first kids coding dojo celebrates launch!

On Friday 23rd October, kids from across the region helped the team at Code Ninjas to celebrate the launch of their brand-new coding dojo. Owners, Deepa, Suprita and Shruti, were determined to make it a day to remember for video-game-loving kids in their community. And since the UK entered a second nationwide lockdown, Deepa and the team have kicked off a whole host of online activities that local ninjas can enjoy at home!

After opening the dojo doors, Deepa and her team of Code Senseis - the name given to Code Ninjas’ teachers - welcomed budding coders and their families to raise a glass (at a distance, of course) and toast their new business. Children were then invited to take part in a whole host of fun activities and games, kicking off their half term in style.

“I loved my afternoon at Code Ninjas, it was amazing! The Sensei looking after me was so kind and because of my previous knowledge and love of coding, he allowed me to do more difficult stuff and not just the basics. I would definitely recommend it to other kids my age and can’t wait to come back,” explained Sohan, one of the children at the launch party.

The community-minded group, who all have a background in IT, made the decision to launch their kids coding school after their search for opportunities for their own children came up empty. The team also saw the value in bringing their unique coding curriculum to a town so steeped in digital prowess.

“With an abundance of technology firms based in Reading, it was a no-brainer for us to bring a coding school to the area. We all had such a fantastic day and want to thank all of the wonderful families who came along to wish us well,” said Deepa. “It really was a celebration and a great way for us to introduce ourselves to local budding ninjas and their parents, just in time for lockdown. We’re over the moon with the positive feedback we’ve already received since the launch party and have been so happy to see how many ninjas have signed up for our online activities.”

The curriculum that the team will be delivering is all built around two key commitments - teaching kids to code in a fun environment and providing parents with a convenient service. Sessions include CREATE, which children aged 7-14 can work through after-school and on weekends, Camps which are more in-depth courses that last for anything between one day and one week, and Parents’ Night Out which gives parents a night off and kids the chance to enjoy an evening with like-minded friends.

One of the parents at the grand opening bonanza was Mohima, who brought her two daughters along to enjoy a taster session, “The girls really enjoyed their time in the dojo - they are looking forward to coming back for the classes. The team were very professional and answered all of my questions.”

Families also commented on how well organised the day was and how comfortable they felt with the strict social distancing policies. Despite the fact that the dojo doors have now temporarily closed until restrictions are lifted, children - like Sohan - can still work towards achieving the highest Code Ninjas’ honour of becoming a black belt!

“We’re here to guide the children of Reading through our exciting curriculum and, with the help of our team of Senseis, truly put Reading on the map for kids coding education,” added co-owner Shruti. “We’re looking forward to a ninja-fuelled future, that's for sure!”
