Education Sector Leads the Way in Female Travel Safety
The education sector is leading the way in educating its female business travellers in the risks they may encounter due to legal and cultural restrictions.
In a recent survey conducted across eleven universities, Maiden Voyage found that 28% of women suffered a negative incident while travelling. These incidents included sexual harassment from field research staff and local taxi drivers, blackmail, molestation, having unsolicited photographs taken, up-skirting, and even being offered money for sex.
As a result, several universities including the University of The West of Scotland (UWS) and Leeds Beckett have implemented safeguarding solutions from Maiden Voyage.
Andrew Disbury, Vice Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) from UWS said, “With almost 1,500 staff and Global Engagement one of our three clear thematic aspirations, we are very aware of our obligations to support our diverse traveller community and felt that Maiden-Voyage provided the most appropriate and cost-effective solution to help us meet our duty of care responsibilities towards our female travellers.”
“We have seen explosive growth amongst the academic sector, beyond all other sectors, when looking to provide the most appropriate pre-travel support to their Female and LGBTQ travellers,” said Carolyn Pearson, founder and CEO of Maiden Voyage.
Solutions adopted by the education sector include intensive classroom workshops, eLearning, an online platform through which academics can connect whilst travelling away from their base, a series of traveller wellbeing webinars as well as access to a database of female-friendly hotels.
