Small World Cinema’s Free Family Film Festival In Beckenham To Go-Ahead After Successful Crowd Funding Campaign
Bromley-based community organisation Small World Cinema has raised over £1,000 in just one week, enabling its much-loved Free Family Film Fest in Beckenham to go ahead for its fourth year.
With many thanks to the community support and local sponsors they are delighted to announce that the annual festival now takes place on Saturday 4 September 2021, from 10.30am until 6.00pm.
This year’s event is being made possible thanks to sponsors and donations from people who contributed to the recent crowdfunding campaign. Small World Cinema founder Saskia van Roomen said: “We’ve been humbled by the generosity of the community and our sponsors this year. These include London Film School, HomeZone Estate Agents, Rival Colour, Nerd Digital, Loquacious Media, PRL Studio, Thunderbird Releasing, Free Film Festivals, Beckenham Place Mansion, Know How You Sewing School and Splatt Theatre Co.
Small World Cinema warmly invites everyone to the Free Family Film Fest, which is returning to Beckenham Place Mansion, in South-East London, following last year’s forced gap.
Event highlights include:
• a unique free programme of international films and short animations suitable for the entire family
• vlogging and presenting workshops with Loquacious Media and PRL Studio (ticketed)
• special effects make-up sessions for teenagers led by Monster Academy (ticketed)
• a range of free arts and crafts activities
• free animation activities with local artists
• an outdoor food market with delicacies from across the globe
Inclusivity and diversity are at the heart of the Small World Cinema Festival ethos, reflected in the fantastic programme of films and events.
Saskia van Roomen said: “We can’t believe the positive response to our festival fundraiser and we are so grateful for the support of the community and our sponsors. It demonstrates that there is a great need for the community to get together. After a year of very little creativity and togetherness we can’t wait to get out and share our passion for film with local children and families. Film Programme 2021:
• Short animations curated by the London International Animation Festival.
Founded in 2004, LIAF is the largest animation festival in the UK and promotes the whole spectrum of animation, showing that animation is for everyone. The films screened at the festival this year come from across the world including Hungary, Portugal, Latvia, Russia, France, UK, USA and more.
• Binti: Belgium, 2019
Twelve-year-old Binti dreams of becoming a famous vlogger like her idol Tatyana. But when the police try to deport her and her dad, they are forced to flee. When Binti meets eco-warrior Elias the two become friends. While Binti helps Elias to vlog about his 'save-the-okapi-club', she hatches the perfect plan: her dad has to fall in love and marry Elias's mum, so they can stay in Belgium. A warm and vibrant adventure with a hero whose spirit and optimism leaves us filled with hope.
• My Dad is a Heel Wrestler, Japan 2018
Nine-year-old Shota’s understanding of goodies versus baddies is challenged in the wrestling arena when he discovers his father actually plays a ‘heel’ or villain called Cockroach who everyone loves to hate. Inspired by the children’s book Papa no shigoto wa warumono desu, and featuring real pro wrestling champion Hiroshi Tanahashi as Shota’s father this is a heart-warming tale that is sure to leave you smiling.
