Mental health problems cost us £34.9 billion a year – so what’s the solution?

11 May 2021: With this week marking the 21st anniversary of Mental Health Awareness Week, now seems a good time to ask ourselves one simple question. How can we support staff more effectively with their mental health issues?

The impact of mental health issues in the UK workplace is significant:

• £1300 per employee whose mental health need is unsupported

• 72 million working days lost

• A cost to the UK economy of £34.9 billion each year (source: Centre for Mental Health)

So what’s the solution?

TeamDoctor’s award-winning, clinically led programme offers a preventative approach to workplace mental health issues. It is the UK’s leading source of health education for patients and provides films, animations, interactive e-learning programmes and podcasts to help bosses offer more support to their employees.

Rosie Runciman, co-founder of the Team Doctor says ‘Statistics from Mental Health England tell us that 1 in 6 employees are experiencing mental health problems at any one time. But they are very reluctant to admit this to their employer. So our programme is designed to create behaviour change in the workplace’

Most of the companies Team Doctor works with make the course mandatory and send a new, short film to all staff once a week. So line managers have to access and absorb the information which is intended to cause real behaviour change in the workplace.

TeamDoctor content is clinically led, adheres to National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines and has national accreditation.

During Mental Health Awareness Week (10 to 16 May) Team Doctor is offering its courses to all employees at half price.
