Hotel celebrates after AA delivers a boost to its four star rating

ONE of south Cumbria’s most popular hotels is celebrating after climbing up the highly competitive AA rankings and being labeled a ‘stand-out’ destination.

The Abbey House Hotel and Gardens has been a four-star venue since 2014, after £4m was invested in a major revamp.

But it has now achieved four-star silver standard, elevating it to a level which is within touching distance of coveted five-star status. The hotel has also retained its AA Rosette for the food it serves in Oscar’s bar and restaurant.

General manager John Horton (image attached) is delighted with the verdict of the inspector. He said: “A huge amount of work goes into running the Abbey House Hotel and Gardens and Oscar’s, and ensuring each and every one of our guests has a fantastic experience.

“It is very pleasing that the dedication of the team has been rewarded in this way. It is notoriously difficult to climb the rankings in the AA star guide, so to have done so and to have achieved silver star status, while retaining our rosette, really is something the Abbey House and Oscar’s are very proud of.”

The AA recognises around 4,000 hotels across Britain and Ireland and uses a special ‘merit score’ to provide consumers with a means of comparing hotels within the same star rating. This score is out of 100 and hotels gaining scores of 85 and over are awarded five-star status.

The Abbey House was awarded a score of 83 which means it is at the highest end of the four-star spectrum.

AA Inspector Mike Atkinson said: “The Abbey House Hotel & Gardens has a great deal to commend, not least its superb grounds and architectural heritage.

“Substantial investment and stylish design coupled with high levels of quality make this a 'stand-out' destination.

“This was an enjoyable guest experience, one that found a well-managed team, who were keen to please. Physically the hotel is in very good shape, with high quality and style, along with generally spacious bedrooms.”

The Abbey House Hotel and Gardens sits in 14 acres of gardens and woodland and is one of the North West’s most popular wedding destinations. It has 60 accommodation rooms including a number of suites.

The new AA four-star silver rating places the Abbey House Hotel in the top ten four star hotels in Cumbria including the Lake District. Rooms can be booked for as little as £56 by visiting https://www.abbeyhousehotel.com/.
