Hotel’s famous gardens which were designed by one of 19th century’s most eminent horticulturalists are open to all this Easter

A HOTEL has issued an open-to-all invitation to its famous gardens as it prepares for a sun-kissed Easter weekend.

The grounds of the Abbey House Hotel were designed by Gertrude Jeckyll, one of the 19th century’s most prolific horticulturalists.

Now the hotel's general manager, John Horton, is inviting the public to spend time wandering about the manicured lawns and tree-lined pathways of the 14-acre expanse.

He said: “The gardens really are wonderful at this time of the year. While they are not in full bloom until the summer, the sound of birdsong is beautiful the trees are starting to spring into life.

“The approach to the hotel is a vivid display of red and yellow tulips, and there are splashes of colour about the grounds; a sign that spring really is here.

“We are keen to be used as often as possible by people who live in the community, so I am delighted to welcome local residents to enjoy the grounds.

“There is no requirement for them to do so, but if they wish to drop in for a drink or bite to eat at Oscar's Bar and restaurant they would be most welcome.”

Jekyll was one half of one of the most influential and historical partnerships of the Arts and Crafts movement, thanks to her association with the celebrated English architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens who designed the Abbey House Hotel.

She was responsible for landscaping at numerous Lutyens projects and in total created more than 400 gardens.

Oscar’s Al Fresco, the hotel’s outdoor dining experience, will be serving food and cocktails across the bank holiday weekend. Guests who do not wish to dine outside are welcome to enjoy the bar and restaurant’s indoor dining area which overlooks either the hotel's gardens or driveway.

John said: “Our gardens are ideally positioned to enjoy sun into the early evening, and many of our guests agree there are there are few places which match up to them when it comes to a refreshing drink in beautiful surroundings.”
