Penny Peppers’ Naked Punk project is live in Sussex

The St Leonards-based author has festival gigs across the summer

Catch her live on Friday 7 June at 8pm at Little Gate Big Festival, Sussex

Author, poet and fifty-something punky veteran, Penny Pepper is a regular on telly, radio and in the press.

Penny is taking the candid Naked Punk project on the road to perform her signature mash-up of poems of anger, self-worth, nudity and activism - all delivered with her trademark humour, rage and compassion.

This June, Penny joins the cream of music, entertainment and family fun at Little Gate Big Festival - with a Friday evening warm up beginning at 8pm (entry is free). Wheelchair access provided for the main stage and key areas. Disabled parking and toilet facilities are available at Little Gate Big Festival.

Penny says; “ I will take the audience to my rock and roll era in my memoir, First in the World Somewhere - the days of early Alan McGee, meeting Ian Dury, fan mail from Robert Wyatt and a Christmas card from Morrissey. Not forgetting my burgeoning days as a disabled activist - a passion that has stayed with me all my life.

Future stops for the Naked Punk are HASTINGS FRINGE 10 Aug - The Stables, Hastings and BAVARD BAR 21 August - Kino St Leonards, then HASTINGS LITERARY FESTIVAL at The Printworks on 30 August. If you are heading to WOMAD you will also find Penny in the Hip Yak Poetry Shack.

As Penny states in her Naked Punk Manifesto; “I’m naked because I strive to be open in my writing... to strip away stereotypes. Punk is the energy that triggered my activism, and my passion for social justice and equality.” ENDS

"Penny Pepper's work is a virtuoso display of wit, invention and courage.

It's thought-provoking and funny and moving and makes us see the world differently" - Dame Margaret Drabble.

"Why am I The Naked Punk?

Punk is my raw beginning. It saw my writing find a raging home in early fanzines. Punk fired a freedom in me to start accepting myself, that I was OK as a human being, as a woman, as a creative, who could challenge the categories imposed upon me.

Punk is the energy that triggered my activism, and my passion for social justice and equality.

A genre-defying and versatile writer, Penny Pepper’s work is a mixture of the quirky and the lewd, with a focus on the examination of difference and identity. An acclaimed author, performer and activist, Penny’s debut poetry collection Come Home Alive, was published by Burning Eye Books, September 2018. Its racy cover was immediately banned on Facebook!

Penny’s recent memoir charts her punky coming of age and creative journey in the Thatcher years and beyond. First in the World Somewhere is published in hardback by Unbound and launched at The Royal Festival Hall. The actor/activist Liz Carr praised its wit and candour when she chose it as her personal pick on Radio 4’s ‘A Good Read’ in October 2018.

Penny wrote the taboo-breaking short story collection, Desires Reborn in 2012 and won a Creative Futures Literary Award shortly after. In 2014 her one-woman spoken word show, Lost in Spaces, premiered to strong reviews at Soho Theatre.
