Data privacy champion BeecherMadden, warns of skills shortage

BeecherMadden Joins The National Cyber Security Alliance in Global Effort to Support Data Privacy Day by Signing On as a Champion

BeecherMadden also warn of a shortage of Data Privacy individuals.

BeecherMadden announced its commitment to Data Privacy Day ‒ an international effort held annually on January 28 to create awareness about the importance of respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust – by signing on as a Champion. As a Data Privacy Day Champion, BeecherMadden recognises and supports the principle that organisations, businesses and government all share the responsibility of being conscientious stewards of personal information.

With the introduction of GDPR, affecting companies globally, privacy is the hot topic for 2017. Predictions are that an additional 75,000 data privacy jobs will be created in the UK, as a result of the legislation. These individuals do not currently exist and with the skills-gap in cyber security already creating a problem, this shortage is going to add pressure to the industry. Candidates who currently work within data privacy, move less often than their counterparts in security. They can also command huge salary increases to move, due to the high demand they find themselves in. Companies need to consider training new individuals in the knowledge and skills required to fulfil these new positions. Privacy encompasses physical and cyber security and this is a good opportunity for companies to bring these functions closer together.

In North America, the Data Privacy Day initiative is officially led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), a nonprofit, public-private partnership dedicated to promoting a safer, more secure and more trusted internet. About Data Privacy Day

Data Privacy Day began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. Data Protection Day commemorates the Jan. 28, 1981, signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection. The National Cyber Security Alliance, the nation's leading nonprofit, public-private partnership promoting cybersecurity and privacy education and awareness, leads the effort in North America. The Data Privacy Day initiative is made possible by generous support from our sponsors and is advised by a distinguished advisory committee of privacy professionals.
