A Greener Future for Fashion - Upcoming STEM Forum Unlocks a More Sustainable Fashion Industry
LONDON, FEB. 1, 2024 - The British International Education Association (BIEA) will host its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Forum 2024, a timely event focussing on the vital role of science and technology in creating a more sustainable fashion industry.
This conference, scheduled for February 1, 2024, from 2pm - 5pm, will take place at the Westminster City Hall, London, UK, only a stone’s throw from the Houses of Parliament, and will be supported by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Patricia McAllister. It comes at a time of intensifying environmental crises and will feature fashion insiders and disruptors, with the common goal of reducing fashion’s outsized environmental impact.
By showcasing the insights of renowned industry experts, the BIEA hopes to galvanise the next generation of brilliant minds to hone their scientific talents and transform fashion. The forum also launches the BIEA’s Threads For The Future Competition, which invites thousands of talented students from a global audience to dream up creative technologies to combat fashion’s environmental impact.
In conjunction with expert insights and networking sessions, the Forum will also provide a platform for collaboration, and idea exchange, whilst helping the next generation of fashion innovators connect with educators, professionals, and organisations that share the common goal of making fashion more sustainable.
The event will bring together prestigious industry insiders, educators, and disruptors. The guests include:
> Veronika Kapsali: Professor of Materials, Technology and Design at the London College of Fashion, Veronika blurs the lines between design and STEM through her groundbreaking work at the Active Materials Lab. An acclaimed innovator, Veronika will be giving an insight into her work, which seeks to change the future landscape of textiles.
> Jawara Alleyne is an interdisciplinary artist, and designer for his eponymous label. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, Jawara’s recent creative output is influenced by his Caribbean streetwear, and challenges notions of masculinity.
Liberty Fabrics: One of the most renowned fabric designers in the World, Liberty Fabrics will be using their industry expertise and 150 years of experience to discuss the impact of fashion supply chains on sustainability.
> Sew London Project: Since 2013, the social enterprise has been dedicated to environmental care and community well-being. The Sew London Project interacts closely with local communities, offering tailored programs that focus on sustainable fashion education, and emphasising the importance of reducing textile waste through creative initiatives.
> Student Projects: Willow, a student from LEHS school in West London, will be talking about her brilliantly innovative compostable shoe. Designed with the intention of promoting biopolymers’ versatility and reducing the use of petrochemical textiles, Willow will be inspiring students at the Forum to brainstorm and innovate their own sustainable technologies.
