Bakers Call on Londoners To Help Save Over A Ton Of Afternoon Tea From Going To Waste. (1,000 boxes)
8th August, London-based Britain Loves Baking an online baking box producer and retailer is donating the proceeds from the sale of 1,000 fresh afternoon tea boxes,100Kg of chocolate truffles, and 1,000 bottles of iced tea to charity. After a corporate customer canceled the order in the early hours of this morning.
Since 4 am the baking team has been creating content to show people the sheer volume of food they have. And sharing it across their social channels to drive sales of the boxes and awareness for the huge food waste issue happening all over the country and at a time when some parents are skipping a meal every day.
The 1.6 tonnes (is the equivalent of a mid-sized family car or 120 bars of gold) of baked goods, truffles, and ices tea worth £20,000 will end up in landfill if they can’t s them within the next 48 hours. The corporate order was to celebrate National Afternoon Tea Week which starts today and runs for the week.
The company’s founder, Greg Wixted said “as a purpose-driven business whose mission is to help disadvantaged young people turn their big food ideas into a reality and to help create a future where nobody goes hungry, this has shocked and upset everyone here. Since the early hours, we have been working nonstop, without sleep to try and sell these boxes so they don’t end up in the bin. The reaction has been great, and we sold about 100 this morning. So, if anyone is the area, heading to a team meeting or in the park and fancies some amazing afternoon tea treats come and see us, we are here until 7PM.
Each box contains an array of fresh cakes, shortbread, scone, truffles, cream, and jam and is served with a choice of iced tea and is being sold for just £5 (RRP £17.50) with the money going to their charity partners.
Set up by the London-based businessman and lecturer in June 2020, after he helped his brothers in Australia turn their Darwin-based hospitality business into online meal kits and locally sourced grocery business. The business has grown over the last 18 months and the fresh baking box idea was their first start-up created to help drive the local economy. By incubating new ideas internally and providing the team with space, access to the infrastructure, and supply chain Britain Loves Baking has built up over the last two years.
