UK Zero Waste Toothpaste Tabs to combat Ocean Plastic Pollution

A shocking 1.5 billion waste toothpaste tubes end up in landfill or our oceans every year – because all the tubes currently on the market cannot be recycled.

British sustainable oral healthcare brand Brushbox (www.brushbox.com) decided to do something about this and came up with an innovative new solution, Zero-Waste Toothpaste Tabs.

Please see the attached press release below for more details.

Brushbox founder Mike Donovan is available for interview, and Toothpaste Tab samples are available for you to try/review.

What can we do about this everyday bathroom item which is an unexpected threat to our environment?

With David Attenborough’s new film ‘A Life On Our Planet’ dominating our social media feeds, we’re all more aware than we’re ever been about the unintentional impact our every-day lives can cause to our planet’s plastic-waste problem. And it’s the mundane, everyday items which can catch us out – with the average person using & throwing way 300 plastic toothbrushes in our lifetime, many of us are now switching to sustainable alternatives such as bamboo toothbrushes for this very reason. But there is another everyday item lurking in our bathrooms which most of us are unaware presents an even greater threat to our environment.

Because of the way conventional toothpaste tubes are manufactured, with different grades of plastic mixed together or combined with an aluminium lining, they are almost impossible to recycle via conventional household collection. This means that the tubes we place into our recycling unfortunately end up being sent straight to landfill, with an estimated 1.5bn plastic toothpaste tubes being added to the pile each year.

To combat this problem, the sustainable oral healthcare disruptors at Brushbox decided to do something about it.

The award-winning Cardiff-based company, who since 2018 have been sending biodegradable, sustainable bamboo toothbrushes direct to customers’ doors, alongside their ‘Buy 1, Give 1, Plant 1’ scheme (whereby they plant a tree and gift a brush to disadvantaged child for every brush sold), have now launched an innovative solution to this problem with their new Zero-Waste Toothpaste Tabs which they currently sell direct to customers via their website (www.brushbox.com).

Brushbox Founder and CEO Mike Donovan said:

“We were shocked to discover that almost every single toothpaste tube currently on the market is not recycled. In the current climate there really is no excuse for brands to stick their head in the sand and continue using materials which are damaging to our environment rather than implementing sustainable alternatives.

“Our Zero-Waste Toothpaste Tabs have been specifically designed by dentists and come packaged in 100% compostable and plastic-free packaging which can be disposed of directly in your organic waste once used.

“Our Toothpaste Tabs are made from 100% natural ingredients so that both your teeth and the environment will benefit. And because our Tabs come ready made in the perfect pea-sized portion size you need, there’s zero excess paste being wasted and as such no excess or unnecessary consumption on our planet’s resources.

“We wanted to offer families another way to ‘Save the Planet, Twice a Day’ without ever having to leave their home.”

Conventional toothpaste also consists of approximately 50% water and therefore requires a mixture of preservatives and stabilizers in order to extend its shelf-life. Brushbox’s vegan-friendly Toothpaste Tabs however contain no water and as such do not need any artificial additives or preservatives, but only the highest quality, 100% natural & cruelty-free ingredients which your teeth actually need.

So how do you use the Toothpaste Tabs? Turns out its super simple; take a Tab, place it in your mouth and start to chew, using the saliva already in your mouth. Whilst doing this, wet the bristles of your (bamboo) brush and start brushing your teeth as normal, foaming up the Tab as you go. After 2-minutes just rinse & dry your brush/bristles, and spit. And that's it -bite, chew, brush. In fact, Brushbox even produced a short video to show us all how exactly easy they are to use.
