Cancer Central launches dedicated playlists to ease isolation for people with cancer

An organisation which helps people affected by cancer find the support and information they need has launched a pre-Christmas #HereForYou campaign which aims to use music to ease increased isolation for people undergoing treatment during Covid-19.

Cancer Central, which uses its Ask Ave to guide patients, cancer survivors, families and friends to the right support and information as they need it, has now launched two dedicated playlists on Spotify. One with calming music and the other upbeat.

The young social enterprise’s founder and CEO says the campaign offers families and friends the chance to deliver a personal message this Christmas as an alternative to the traditional card – and is urging patients and their loved ones to add special music to help keep them connected during the festive season.

Cancer Central’s founder Avril Chester says she drew on her own experiences of being treated for breast cancer five years ago to try and ease the increased sense of isolation being felt by many patients, families and friends especially during Covid.

Each track uploaded costs just 50p, “We are currently improving our services with a new platform release scheduled in early 2021. Every penny raised is helping us to keep the site free, for people affected by cancer.” Said Chester.

Avril said: “Whether it’s the initial diagnosis, being treated in hospital or recovery at home, cancer is a challenge for anyone. Covid has made that even harder, with many people shielding and therefore distanced from the very people they need the most.

“We wanted to find a simple way to let everyone affected know that they’re not alone through music. This year, a lot of people may wish to send more than a Christmas card, especially to people who are shielding, so this offers a simple, personal way to let those you care about know you are thinking about them.”
