Cancer Central recognised for innovation in brand new award
Social impact start-up Cancer Central wins ‘HealthTech Innovation of the Year’, a new category at the 7th Annual Digital Leaders 100 Awards.
The recognition is the latest in a number of accolades for the innovative social enterprise, launched in October 2018, and its founder, Avril Chester.
A new and growing digital platform, Cancer Central has been created to provide a central source of information for those affected by cancer and those who care for them. A breast cancer survivor, Chester founded the company after facing first-hand the many challenges in finding targeted information, resources and support during her own cancer journey. Whatever the question or needs, Cancer Central aims to signpost businesses, services and charities - locally, nationally and online - who can offer the advice and support they need.
Created through a pioneering combination of corporate sponsorship, community support and crowdsourced innovation, Cancer Central has built significant momentum in the 9 months since it was officially launched.
“Cancer Central has been created from over 25,000 hours from 200+ individuals and 30+ organisations, with major contributions from TechFINIUM, ROQ and IBM. Winning this award is an incredible achievement for all who are involved in supporting people affected by cancer,” said Cancer Central Founder & CEO, Avril Chester.

Over time, Cancer Central will become the go-to place to find cancer support. Support includes but is not limited to, benefits advice, insurance products, counselling, complementary therapy, respite care, hats, wigs, lingerie, skincare, financial help, nutrition advice, local societies or communities, meals on wheels, books, blogs, forums, local hospital taxi services – all based on geographical location and cancer type.

Each year’s list is created from nominations submitted by members of the 100,000 strong Digital Leaders Community before being shortlisted by the DL100 judges who are taken from the Advisory Board members.
