Young Banker of the Year Award 2020 launched with focus on responsible banking

8th January 2020

The 2020 edition of the most prestigious annual event for the UK’s leading Young Bankers has been launched today. The organisers, the Chartered Banker Institute, are inviting nominations from its 30,000 members, and more widely from individuals and UK banking institutions (including building societies, credit unions and fintechs).

Founded in 1987, the Chartered Banker Young Banker of the Year competition aims to showcase tomorrow’s leaders in banking. The challenge set for entrants is designed to test their capacity to generate new ideas and improve outcomes for their organisation’s customers, colleagues and communities. This year, entrants are asked to develop ideas which clearly demonstrate responsible and sustainable banking.

Contestants are asked to develop a proposal in response to the following question:

“What idea would you implement in your organisation to improve outcomes for customers, colleagues, and communities? Your idea should reflect your vision for the future of the industry and be consistent with the UN Principles for Responsible Banking .”

Following initial judging and live Semi-Finals in Edinburgh (3rd June) and Birmingham (16th June), the Grand Final will be held at London’s Mansion House in September. Four finalists will present their proposals to a judging panel composed of senior industry figures and the Young Banker of the Year 2020 will be presented with a trophy and a voucher for an overseas holiday for two.

Sarah Walker from Santander, Winner of 2019 Young Banker of the Year, commented:

“My experience with the competition was amazing from start to finish. It has benefited me in a number of ways, including improving my confidence and public speaking, and has also given me exposure to senior leaders in my organisation.”

Simon Thompson, Chief Executive of the Chartered Banker Institute, added:

“I’m delighted to launch the 2020 edition of the Chartered Banker Young Banker of the Year competition. This year, our competition will identify and showcase the best ideas, from the best and brightest young bankers, that will deliver responsible and sustainable banking for our customers and communities. I’m looking forward to seeing the ideas generated and meeting the inspiring young professionals behind them – and to sharing them with as wide an audience as possible”.
