Cleanhearing launch one-of-a-kind medical device for tinnitus

Innovative hearing technology start-up, Cleanhearing, have launched Sono, a groundbreaking medical device for tinnitus relief.

Individuals suffering from tinnitus have limited options as treatments usually focus on helping patients to cope with the condition rather than treating the underlying causes. For years tinnitus was thought to be a condition of the ear, but recent research has identified its link to neuroplastic changes triggered by damage to the auditory system. This finding has led to a number of new electrical stimulation treatments such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), which are intended to modulate tinnitus-related brain activity, but these require a prescription and are restricted to a few clinical settings.

In order to address the clear need for better tinnitus treatment, Cleanhearing developed Sono. Sono is a Class IIa medical device for home use that also uses electromagnetic stimulation to address underlying tinnitus pathophysiology and provide tinnitus relief. The device targets inflammation, microcirculation and other underlying processes to modulate the abnormal brain activity responsible for tinnitus noise. Cleanhearing’s patented technology is based on studies that prove low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields can significantly reduce tinnitus symptoms.

Sono is intuitive to use and consists of an integrated neuro-auditory stimulator in the form of specially adapted headphones operated by a handheld controller. The headphones contain specially modified coils that create low-frequency pulses of electromagnetic energy, which are 100% painless and deliver an effective, relaxing therapy that users can apply comfortably at home. Individuals suffering from pure-tone tinnitus can also connect their Sono device to a smartphone and use the Cleanhearing app to experience simultaneous tailored notched music therapy.

The company spokesperson for Cleanhearing said, “Our goal has been to make evidence-based technologies more accessible for patients and tailor therapy to the individual user. Sono offers a multi-faceted approach to tinnitus relief and is suitable for the majority of tinnitus patients.”

To get the best results from Sono, patients are advised to use it twice a day for twenty minutes for at least two to four months. Sono does not require a prescription but Cleanhearing recommends that patients talk about their condition with a qualified professional before using Sono independently or as part of their treatment plan.
