Enfield opens very first kids coding centre

On Saturday 3rd October Enfield opened its very first coding centre, Code Ninjas. After taking the time to make sure their business was COVID-19 safe, local husband and wife, Neil and Renee Applewhaite, opened the dojo doors to a crowd of excitable young ninjas.

The grand opening, held at the centre on London Road, hosted groups of students - or ninjas - learning how to build robots, drones, create apps and master coding games.

Neil said, "It's been a hectic few months preparing for the launch of the centre but seeing how happy the ninjas were today has made it all worth it! Coding is the future, teaching children at an early age gives them advanced problem-solving skills that are so valuable in later life. It's very fulfilling work and it was great to see today."

Along with business partner, Symeon Eleftheriadis, Neil and Renee identified the need for a coding centre in Enfield after seeing a lack of coding on the traditional school curriculum and after-school clubs.

Renee said, "We are something entirely different from a lot of the education children get in schools. At Code Ninjas, we teach our ninjas to think and solve STEM problems using coding. Coding is vital to a child's education, especially after all the school children missed over the last year. We pride ourselves on using fun to educate! The software we use here is the same as software on popular kids’ games like Scratch®, Minecraft®, Roblox®, so it isn't completely alien to our ninjas."

Code Ninjas is also committed to supporting busy parents. Ninjas aged 5-14 can attend up to two sessions a week and aren’t restricted to the same day and time every week which is ideal for busy families. The team also offers coding camps over the school holidays from Monday to Friday.

One parent said, "Code Ninjas is fantastic. My son, Santino, absolutely loves it. It's a great opportunity for children to learn coding skills. He's learnt about robotics and electronics in the sessions, and it's just a fantastic way for him to learn new skills for the future. I haven't seen this kind of stuff being taught at schools, so I'm over the moon that Enfield now has a place for him to get an opportunity to learn it.

"The support staff are called Senseis - they’re lovely and helped Santino feel comfortable. Most of the Senseis are university students who study physics and computer science, so they create an excellent environment for children to thrive."

A second parent, Magda, said, "My son David loves the lessons and the camps. He is so enthusiastic about learning at Code Ninjas. The positive feedback from the Senseis makes him so happy and want to do even better. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Code Ninjas sessions.”
