Learn to cook in your own home this summer

Most of us know that cooking a meal from scratch with fresh ingredients is generally cheaper and healthier than the alternatives. But what if you don’t know where to start? One local business believes it has the solution.

Former language teacher Laura Vaughan, who is now teaching Food and Nutrition at a school in Swaffham and trained as a Chef at Norwich City College, has been offering customers cookery lessons in their own home, across Norfolk and Suffolk, since 2015.

She says: “Cooking a meal should be a pleasure, rather than a chore. Yet despite all the cookery programmes and books, we rely more on takeaways and ready meals than ever before.

“My business, Cook from Scratch, aims to change that with tailored tuition in your own home to rebuild your kitchen confidence, and master some basic skills, including nutrition and basic food prep. Each session is tailored to people’s particular preferences. And people love learning in the comfort of their own home.”

Vaughan charges £40 for an hour’s tuition, or £80 for two hours and £120 for three hours, after which the customer will have prepared a one, two or three-course meal. (Ingredients excluded.)

She adds: “This compares favourably with restaurant prices. And while anyone can book a restaurant table, you could surprise your loved ones with the best night in ever, and something that has taken rather more skill and effort.”

Vaughan is now looking to increase her customer base, and is happy to consider larger at-home classes. These could involve groups of friends sharing quality time, or a fun family activity for the summer holidays.
