Max Schrems to Speak at European Data Protection Summit London

Data privacy pioneer, Max Schrems, will be among guest speakers at European Data Protection Summit, coming to central London on June 3rd 2019.

LONDON, Mar. 14, 2019 - Data Protection World Forum is delighted to announce that Max Schrems, data privacy pioneer will be speaking at the European Data Protection Summit in central London on June 3rd 2019.

In 2011 as Austrian law student, Max Schrems requested his personal data from Facebook as part of college research, and was shocked by the results.

Facebook had a record of his entire user history, from pages he’d ‘liked’ to private messages he’d sent. Even personal communications regarding a friend’s health, which Schrems had deleted, were still held on the social network’s servers.

Schrems made 22 complaints to the Irish Data Protection Commission, in which he claimed that Facebook was breaking European data protection laws, in fundamental violation of user privacy.

A prolonged battle with Facebook took him all the way to the European Court of Justice, where in 2015, a landmark legal victory triggered an international crisis, and saw the end of Safe Harbour, a data-transfer interface used by thousands of organisations.

Today, Schrems continues to fight for global privacy rights through nyob.eu (None of Your Business), a privacy lobbying group dedicated to ensuring regulators enforce the laws that are there to protect us. The goal is to uphold data privacy which Schrems considers “the most unenforced right” in Europe.

Max Schrems will be among guest speakers at European Data Protection Summit, coming to 133 Houndsditch, London on June 3rd.

Other speakers include:

• Ivana Bartoletti, Head of Privacy and Data Protection at Gemserv

• Tamara Ballard, Data Privacy Lawyer at Channel 4

• Sheila Fitzpatrick, President & Founder at FitzPatrick & Associates

• Edward Hanson-Assan, Associate, Data Protection Officer at Knight Frank

This exclusive event will play host to 800 DPOs, security professionals and senior business decision-makers in search of information, updates, clarity, advice and data protection solutions.

Against a backdrop of increasing data breaches impacting on a global scale, European Data Protection Summit comes at a critical time in data protection and user privacy. The need for ideas, debate, advice and technological solutions has never been greater.

In the evening, the summit will host a dinner, where attendees will be able to enjoy a drinks reception, three-course meal, networking and entertainment.
