Deafscope tandem cyclists arrive at Deaf Hub (Wales) Cardiff as part of an 850 mile fundraising adventure.

On Friday 18th September 2020, tandem cyclists Ishtiaq Hussain and Ernesto Bueno Del Carpio arrived at Deaf Hub Wales in Cardiff. Setting out on a mammoth month-long cycle ride from the West Midlands, around the Welsh coastline and back, a total of 850 miles, Ishtiaq has been joined for various stretches of his cycling adventure by friends Ernesto Bueno Del Carpio, Matthew Lawley, Daniel Jay Cropp and Miriam Makar. They are aiming to raise £100,000 for Deafscope (www.deafscope.co.uk), which is an online directory of Deaf owned and Deaf friendly businesses in the UK. Reaching their target will enable Deafscope to continue to provide services, workshops, training and educational courses for the Deaf and Deaf Usher (deaf and partially blind) communities. Deafscope proudly supports the Deaf and Deaf Usher community ensuring they have equal accessible opportunities, empowering them to reach their full potential.

Ishtiaq Hussain who is the Managing Director of Deafscope explains; "I'm passionate about helping the Deaf community and aim to eradicate barriers; bringing the Deaf community together while improving our network, boosting deaf businesses like never before. Together we will empower Deaf people and help their businesses grow."

"Being empathic to those who struggle with the same barriers as I did during childhood, teens and young adulthood, has been core to my ambition. I want to eradicate such barriers for the Deaf community within the UK and also worldwide. I believe that having this simple, single directory will have a hugely positive impact in the way Deaf people search for services and events to suit their needs."

It was a glorious day to welcome the cyclists in the Deaf Hub garden on Newport Road. The cyclists arrived at 4:30pm having travelled 21.3 miles from Barry that morning. They were greeted by Deaf Hub’s Chair Dafydd Eveleigh, the new centre manager Steven Emery and local members of the Deaf community. Local PCSO Ryan Leeke was passing the Centre at the time and called in to wish the cyclists luck and make a donation. It was an opportunity for him to practice British Sign Language which he has started learning.

Supporters can follow the cyclists’ journey via their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/deafscope).

Deaf Hub (Wales), formerly Cardiff Deaf Centre, is the cultural and social home of Cardiff and surrounding areas’ Deaf people. For over 40 years, Deaf people and their families from all walks of life have made use of the Hub for social events, friendship, training, information, peer support groups, consultations, spiritual guidance and more. The building has fallen into some disrepair over the years and has been at risk of closure since the economic crisis of 2008. In 2013, knowing the loss of this ‘safe space’ would have a devastating impact on the Deaf community, several members took action to secure the future of the Deaf Centre. The Trustees – the majority of whom are Deaf – have been working on a programme of development of the building and improvement of services. We still need to raise £750,000 to develop the building. Deaf Hub (Wales) is committed to linking and working in partnership with other Deaf led organisations from across Wales and the UK. We too believe that strengthening the network of Deaf organisations across the UK and bringing communities together, will help to eradicate the barriers to daily living experienced by the Deaf community. You, too can make a difference!

Why not offer your community group or organisation Deaf Awareness Training to help your team welcome more Deaf people into your organisation? Contact us to discuss working in partnership with Deaf Hub (Wales): Dr Steve Emery, Deaf Hub Centre Manager via info@deafhub.wales.

Everyone is welcome at Deaf Hub.
