Sign Language Week & Census 2021 - Deaf Hub (Wales)

“Sign Language Week (15th - 21st March) is an important week for the Deaf community. It signifies the week that in 2003, BSL was recognised as an official language by the British Government. This recognition started the work of many organisations to ensure equal access for Deaf people.

This week coincides with Census Day 2021 where we Deaf Hub Wales are supporting Deaf individuals to be able to complete the census correctly. Adrian Blake and Jacqui Bond are two advisors who are available to provide support via Zoom or at Deaf Hub, Newport Road Cardiff by appointment only. The trustees, volunteers and staff of Deaf Hub Wales have worked hard to ensure that the centre is COVID-19 safe with all appropriate measures in place.

The census is important to collect accurate statistics about those who use BSL as their first language, which is why we have chosen to support Deaf people to ensure that they are able to answer the questions as well as they can. With accurate statistics it is hoped that services for Deaf people will become more accessible.

Dafydd Eveleigh Chair person of Deaf Hub says for too long Deaf people have been denied the opportunity to complete the census having to rely on others to complete the forms on their behalf. For the first time Deaf people can complete the form in their first or preferred language with our professional staff who've completed the training programme. We are very excited to be able to provide this service across Wales in person or via Zoom.

If you or someone you know require support in BSL to complete the Census 2021, please get in contact using our census@deafhub.wales email.

About Deaf Hub (Wales) at Cardiff Deaf Centre

Deaf Hub (Wales) is the cultural and social home of Cardiff’s D/deaf people and those within the surrounding areas. Deaf people from all walks of life, members and non-members make use of the centre for social events, training, information, peer support groups, consultations, spiritual guidance and much more.
Many generations of families have used Cardiff Deaf Centre to meet with other members of the community, seek information, seek advice, worship, celebrate, learn and even meet their life partners. For over 40 years D/deaf families have utilised 163 Newport Road as a safe location where ‘All are Welcome’ regardless of their background.
Recently the centre has faced a crisis as a result of the economic turmoil of 2008, the building to fall into disrepair over the years and, in 2013 knowing the loss of this ‘safe space’ would have a devastating impact on the D/deaf community, several members of the community came forward and they sprang into action to rescue the centre ensuring the continuation of a safe place for the D/deaf community. The trustees have been working on a full programme of development of the building and improvement of services to the Deaf

Significant changes have been made with more planned - the current plans for improvements will require approx. £750,000. The charity will be seeking to fundraise these funds.
Cardiff Deaf Centre has recently rebranded to Deaf Hub (Wales) to fully reflect the aspirations of the charity.
