Design Dating with Design for Me - A Start Up Story
(London, England February 23, 2016) Design for Me is an innovative online platform that matchmakes homeowners with the right architect, interior or garden designer for their job. Founder, Emily Barnes, launched Design for Me early last year and now with over 1000 users the numbers are growing fast.
Design Dating
It works much like an online dating site. Homeowners post their details about their project, which is then matched with the most suitable candidates for their specific needs. You quickly see who's interested in your project, and can choose up to three design professionals for a consultation at your home.
As a qualified architect, Emily Barnes has previously worked at various well-established practices. She noticed that homeowners starting home projects with "normal" budgets found it difficult to find someone that was a) interested in a job like theirs b) not prohibitively expensive and c) really good!
Emily saw the problem first hand, “I was working for a practice doing £1M+ jobs when I had the idea for Design for Me. I was surprised at the number of people who called up asking if we could work on their small home extension. I guess it was because we were easy to find online, having a good marketing budget and expensive website..."
Design for Me champions innovative small or young practices or freelancers. Emily knew that home building & renovation projects are perfect for them as they build their reputation and client base. "...at the same time I had friends who had just set up on their own and were finding it difficult to find new clients. I just thought, there needs to be a way for them to get their work in front of the very clients that need them!"
There is a common misconception that high quality, custom design should be reserved for only the wealthy and the privileged. Homeowners who don't know where to start can use Design for Me to easily find the perfect person who can make any type of home renovation or addition a dream come true, even on a strict budget!
The future continues to look bright for Design for Me. There are over 500 design professionals registered with us in London. The next challenge is to drive a bigger marketing campaign to widen the scale of Design for Me across the UK.
