Döner Shack’s new East Midlands restaurant already a recipe for success in Leicester

Döner Shack, the German street-food brand, opened the doors to its new site in Leicester on 11th June, giving 384 customers a taste of its authentic Berlin-inspired kebabs. To celebrate the launch, the restaurant also served up 418 free kebabs over a four-hour period on 10th June to give the locals the chance to taste the exceptional quality for themselves.

Located at St Peter’s Square in the Highcross. Döner Shack is one of the latest restaurants to hit Leicester with its new generation of street food in a relaxed and casual, but memorable experience. With seating for 110 diners, including an outside eating area, the restaurant is already proving to be a recipe for success, having seen a footfall of 3,000 over its first week of trading.

Commenting on the recent launch of Döner Shack’s latest flagship restaurant, co-founder and managing director, Sanjeev Sanghera, said: “We’ve been completely taken back by the initial support we’ve received since opening the restaurant. Our first week has been a huge success, with our food and drinks delighting our customers. We’re thrilled to be challenging the perception of kebabs in Leicester by serving ethically sourced, good-quality meat, fresh salad and our delicious signature sauces. Our aim is to help people realise that kebabs are an incredible fresh-tasting, delicious and convenient food concept and not just a guilty late-night pleasure.

“For the free kebab giveaway, more than 1,700 people had signed up to come along – these numbers demonstrate the excitement of our arrival. It’s incredible! Our kitchen staff deserve huge credit for all their hard work to serve as many people as possible in such a short period, and it also shows the efficiency and speed of our streamlined kitchen operations. Now summer has arrived, Döner Shack is going to be the perfect place for people to come and eat whilst doing their shopping or gather with friends for a fun evening out,” added Sanjeev.

Diners can enjoy authentic kebabs containing up to 85 per cent lean turkey breast and beef, with no artificial fillers or excessive oils, using freshly baked traditional Pidas with a choice of salads and home-made signature sauces, including curry ketchup, hot scharf and garlic mayo. As well as kebabs, the menu options include wraps, currywursts, meat dishes called "tellers", chicken schnitzel bites, falafel bites, a kids box meal and a puppywurst for dogs. There are also meat-free versions of the items, including vegan currywursts, vegan schnitzel strips and plant-based shawarma. A selection of milkshakes and German soft drinks are also available.

Doner Shack’s official charity partner, Cash for Kids (Midlands), raised over £500 at the launch event and they will continue to fundraise in the restaurant with their collection boxes. Charlotte Walker, Regional Charity Manager (Midlands), Cash for Kids, said: “It’s heart-warming when businesses pledge to give back to those in need in their communities. This money makes such a big difference for our youngest members of society and goes directly to making a difference to those in need. A big thank you to Döner Shack and their customers.”

Kimberley Jayne, a customer who visited the restaurant last week with her baby son, commented: “I was looking forward to having a taste. Döner Shack seemed to be different from a normal takeaway, so I really wanted to come and try one. I’m definitely coming back.”

Döner Shack now has three restaurants in the UK, with the other two in Manchester and Leeds. Further Döner Shack outlets are due to open in Glasgow and London in the coming months, and there are plans for up to 70 restaurants in the next five years.
