Free Online Coding Taster Session with DWP Digital and Code First Girls

DWP Digital has teamed up with CodeFirstGirls to deliver a free online ‘Introduction to JavaScript’ course on Thursday 20 May at 6pm. The course is open to anyone interested in taking their first steps into the world of front-end development. People can register now: https://codefirstgirls.typeform.com/to/qC4iiEhm

As well as exploring the basics of Javascript, you’ll also get the opportunity to find out more about what it’s like working in a digital role in government, and using your skills to make an impact on society.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) digital services are accessed by more than 20 million people each year at all stages of their lives.

Nicola Platts, head of talent marketing at DWP Digital said: “It’s widely acknowledged that women are underrepresented in the tech industry.

“In DWP Digital, we’re passionate about closing this gender skills gap as we believe that a diverse balanced workforce leads to more creativity and innovation. So we’re excited about this partnership with CodeFirstGirls to help encourage those who identify as women and non-binary into considering a future career within tech.”

The course will be delivered by DWP Digital software engineers alongside CodeFirstGirls instructors and provides an accessible learning opportunity for all, no matter what your educational background.

Chloe Williams, one of DWP Digital’s software engineers who is instructing the course, said: “The ‘Introduction to JavaScript’ course will provide a window into an industry many young women may not have experienced before. Three years ago, my journey to becoming a software engineer started with something very similar and I hope this course highlights that you don’t necessarily need a computing degree to be a software engineer.”

Over the next year, DWP Digital is looking to hire hundreds of digital specialists across a wide range of roles, including apprenticeship opportunities. Subscribe to the DWP Digital newsletter to keep up to date with the latest news, opportunities, podcasts and more.
