Do you want to improve your digestion?
Digestive related health problems affect approximately one in five people in the UK. If we can’t digest our food effectively, our cells are not working optimally, which leads to a variety of health issues including; indigestion, acid-reflux, bloating, wind, food intolerances, inflammation and fatigue.
People of all ages can benefit from supplemental digestive enzymes. These enzymes enhance our ability to get nutrients to our cells. As we age we typically make fewer digestive enzymes. Children with learning, behavioural, digestive or skin issues often benefit from enzyme supplementation. People who are sensitive to digesting certain foods such as dairy or gluten products can often broaden what they eat, when using a high quality enzyme supplement, because they are actually digesting the food properly.
Dr. Elizabeth Lipsky says “When working with clients I am always looking for the lever that will push healing into gear. One tool that I have found to be effective is supplemental digestive enzymes.
What are Enzymes?
Enzymes are catalysts that are used to facilitate tiny chemical changes for virtually every single chemical process that occurs in your body. There are thousands of known enzymes and each has a specific job. We use them to think, create energy, adjust hormone levels and virtually everything else. We cannot use a vitamin, a mineral, a fat, make or break down cells, or control blood sugar without enzymes.
Our body makes two main types of enzymes: metabolic enzymes and digestive enzymes. The metabolic enzymes run all our body systems. Digestive enzymes are produced in the pancreas and throughout the digestive system to help us break down our foods into molecules that our cells recognize. These enzymes are manufactured from proteins and need to be continually replenished.
Each enzyme works on a specific type of molecule. The main types of enzymes are proteases for digesting protein, lipases for digesting fats, amylases for digesting starches and carbohydrates and cellulases for digesting fibre.
Food enzymes are introduced to the body through any raw food we eat - such as a fresh apple or a green salad. However, raw food makes only enough enzymes to digest that particular food, not enough to be stored in the body for later use. Any cooking or processing of food destroys the natural enzymes - so it is the digestive system itself that is called upon to produce the enzymes needed to digest cooked food. This places a burden on our digestive system, which we can help by supplementing with high quality digestive enzymes.
