There’s still plenty to do in the garden over autumn, says family-run gardening firm

Essex-based company Family Tree Gardens is advising homeowners that there’s still plenty to do outside in the garden over the autumn weeks and months, even once the summer is over.

“We think some people reckon there’s not much left to be done in the garden once the air gets colder and the kids go back to school,” says former lawyer Thomas Nolan, who runs the Stock-based business with his brother James.

“But actually, there’s plenty to be getting on with outside. It’s the perfect season to give your garden a good old tidy, before the cold weather really sets in. Put in the hours at this time of year and your garden will stay looking neat and well-tended all winter.”

Gardening jobs for this time of year include:

• Clearing fallen leaves

• Tidying up borders – remove collapsed stems and dying leaves

• Clearing away old crops from the veg plot

• Giving the lawn a thorough final mow before the winter

• Repair any damage to things like sheds or compost bins

• Clean out the garden pond if you have one, as well as bird feeders

The family-run gardening business covers the Essex area, and takes on varied aspects of garden care and design, estate maintenance, makeovers, lawn care and more. It has a particular concern for protecting the environment and is working towards being carbon-neutral. Clients include the Bishop of Chelmsford’s estate.

The Nolans became keen gardeners after school, having gardened with their parents, and have also worked in local botanical gardens.

James joined the business two years ago and the company has two full and two part-time employees.
