Business leadership in the post-pandemic world

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused seismic shifts in every aspect of the business world. As businesses large and small have had to adapt to uncertainty, restrictions and a new normal, what can we learn from business leaders and their responses?

A spotlight on businesses

During the pandemic, business leaders who have offered new ideas, support for their staff, positive collaboration and strong ethical leadership have earned new respect. However, there are other areas where the pandemic has shown businesses a serious need for improvement especially in areas such as diversity and inclusion, corporate responsibility, innovation and employee mental health and wellbeing.

In Spring 2020, business leaders from all sectors from manufacturing to hospitality to engineering were called on to adapt to a completely new set of circumstances. Those who did so successfully were those who embraced changed and adapted their business and their products. As Sharon Seville, Director of First Executive Recruitment says:

"The businesses that are successful going forwards will be those with leadership that realise they can’t go back to ‘normal’."

Business leaders who have clung to the past have taken significant losses, and in an era where corporate responsibility is headline news, integrity has become more important than ever before, in the eyes of the public too.

More than 69% of the UK population have said that Covid-19 has negatively impacted their mental health. Business leaders who have prioritised staff mental health and wellbeing have seen the positive impact it can have, creating a strong and loyal workforce. Business leaders who have adapted, looked ahead and planned for and invested in the future have provided us all with an example of a new type of business leadership. In a post-Covid world, there is an opportunity for Managing Directors, CEOs and leadership teams to make a change and create a better future and a better business.
