Artist, Caroline Lovett highlights the impact of Postcode Wars through the eyes of a mother

Caroline Lovett is more than just an artist. She is a warrior for justice who takes her role as a human citizen to heart, which she encapsulates through her passion for art. Caroline, an emerging, contemporary artist, will be publicly exhibiting her new collection in 2019.

As a mother of four, Caroline is not what you would classify a silent bystander to the crimes perpetuated within her community. She utilises her artistry and creativity as both a therapeutic and empowering tool to help create positive outcomes in our society. Having personally been impacted by the effects of youth crime and postcode wars, she sees her role as a contemporary artist to not only reflect the impact of these crimes but to elevate the conversation around the ‘epidemic’ that seems to be destroying our young people.

Caroline, who has exhibited work in the past, including The Royal Academy Summer exhibition 2018 under the curation of the infamous social commentator and artist Grayson Perry is embarking on showcasing a body of work about the current London issue in 2019. Her bright, bold, abstracted imagery of bodies with maps, is a social commentary about the situation as she explores the issues around gang culture, gang signs and where the roots of these issues arise. These pieces truly convey the depth of field and perspective. Many of the pieces are not only visually impactful and eye-catching from afar, but on closer inspection, they are intimate letters and correspondence between inmates and their family. This juxtaposition of artistic expression reveals the intimate clarity Caroline has on this issue.

Caroline states:

“My work is more than ‘just’ a mother’s story or more than ‘just’ my personal perspective as a London parent, with a son who fell foul of postcode wars and whose path at one stage became perilously close to becoming either a victim or perpetrator of these wars. I feel this work speaks to and about the heartbreaking existence many of us live within London today. My focus is not just about reflecting the issues within my art, but also be a catalyst for this conversation to be addressed.”

Lovett continues:

“No parent wants to be in receipt of the news that their child is a victim of this society ailment. I see my role as someone who has gone through this experience and come out the other end, as a voice to create a positive change.”
