U.K. will use G7 Presidency to “ensure youth voices are heard”, says G7 and G20 Sherpa

The 2021 Youth 7 process will kick off via a virtual Launch Event today, Saturday 6 February 2021.

The Youth 7 (Y7) is one of six engagement groups of the Group of 7 (G7) international intergovernmental forum. It sits alongside the Business 7, Civil Society 7, Labour 7, Women 7 and Science 7.

In 2021, the U.K. hosts the G7 Presidency. The G7 Leaders Summit will take place 11 - 13 June in Carbis Bay, Cornwall.

The Y7 2021 will be hosted by the Future Leaders Network and is expected to take place virtually in early May.

The launch event signals the start of an intense, collaborative effort between Y7 delegates. Over the next four months, these young leaders will come together to agree recommendations on behalf of youth, which they will present to G7 Sherpas, Ministers and Leaders throughout the G7 Summit process. The purpose of the Y7 is to ensure that all agreements and decisions reached by the international governments work for young people now, and in the future.

Commenting, Jonathan Black, the UK G7 and G20 Sherpa, who will deliver a keynote speech at the launch event, says:

"

Covid has affected us all, but has had a particular impact on young people. As we use our G7 Presidency to drive the international agenda to build back better from it, the UK wants to ensure the voices of young people are heard. Whether it's tackling climate change, creating gender equality, or defending against future pandemics - the Y7 offers a unique insight to support our G7 priorities.

Having this diverse and engaged group of young future leaders is a huge asset for the G7 and I look forward to working with them throughout our Presidency year.

"

Commenting, Sophie Daud, Chief Executive of Future Leaders Network says:

Young people now, and in the years to come, will bear the social, economic, political and environmental consequences of the pandemic. G7 Governments must involve them in the difficult decisions that lie ahead, for it is their - our - future that is affected.

The Y7 2021 is a unique opportunity to champion the voice of young people at the highest level of decision making. We are delighted to begin the process today, and look forward to working closely with the U.K. government throughout the Presidency.

The launch event will welcome young leaders from across the world’s most advanced economies to the year-long programme of activities and advocacy. It will take place virtually over Zoom.
