Alliance Manchester Business School Wins Chamber’s Building of the Year Award

Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce has announced the winner of its Building of the Year Award 2019: Alliance Manchester Business School.

Alliance Manchester Business School is part of the University of Manchester’s £1bn campus masterplan. The site has undergone a complete refurbishment with new additions including glazed extensions and a cantilevering structure.

Sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Building, the winner of the Greater Manchester Building of the Year Award was revealed at the Chamber’s Property and Construction Annual Dinner and Awards, sponsored by AEW Architects, which took place last night (Thursday 3rd October) at Imperial War Museum North.

Three hundred businesses attended the event, which saw Alliance Manchester Business School beat off stiff competition from four other finalists: Windmill Green, Tameside One, The Pavilion, and The Roof Gardens.

The winner was chosen by the Chamber’s Property and Construction Committee, which consists of 20 professionals from a range of businesses in the property and construction sector. They received many worthy entries for new buildings from across Greater Manchester and undertook site visits to determine the winner.

Commenting on this year’s winner, Diane Elebert-Morgan, Construction Lead at Greater Manchester Chamber, said: “We had a fantastic range of entries this year and it was very hard to decide on a final winner. The five finalists have all made great contributions to both the economy and their local community.

“The quality of this year’s entries shows the strength and innovation of Greater Manchester’s property and construction sector and these buildings will be landmarks for years to come.”

Last night also saw the Steve Burne Apprentice of the Year Award, sponsored by Laing O’Rourke, presented to Abdul Tahir from the Mace Group. He was nominated for this award because of the great example he has set to current and future apprentices.

Abdul is part of the M-Futures scheme, meaning that he is enrolled on a two-year programme studying an HNC in construction and a L4 NVQ Diploma in Construction and Building Services Management and Supervision (sustainability). The M Futures programme consists of a group of employers that all employ an apprentice who is then rotated around the group of employers for four-month placements over the two-year programme.

The runners-up for the Steve Burne Apprentice of the Year Award were Liam Gee from Three Sixty (Part of Stockport Homes Group) and Holleeann Walker from Laing O’Rourke.
