Prestigious Sandford Award returns to Haslemere Educational Museum

Haslemere Educational Museum is delighted to receive the prestigious Sandford Award for Quality Heritage Education for the second time in succession. The Sandford Award has celebrated and promoted high quality in heritage education since 1978 and is the only scheme in existence, which provides independent quality assurance to sites that run formal learning programmes. The Award, managed by the Heritage Education Trust and Bishop Grosseteste University aims to promote and recognise quality in, and concerning, heritage sites and historic properties to allow meaningful access and understanding for all.

The Award has stringent requirements and the Museum is extremely pleased to have met all of these in the highest category of ‘Well met’. The award reflects the work of the staff and volunteers of the Museum.

The judges made the following citation. Haslemere Museum is a unique site and collection, which has always had, at its heart, a mission to inspire the community to learn by direct experience. Their Education Officer is the lynch pin of the learning offer and her reflective, resourceful and imaginative approach ensure that this programme inspires and informs in equal measures.

In a year where COVID has meant there will be no official ceremony to present the award, receiving the certificate in person from Sandford judge Robin Clutterbuck made the team at the Museum feel very privileged. Robin not only presented the certificate but also said a few words extolling the work of the Museum staff and volunteers.

Education Officer, Kay Topping said ‘It was especially nice to receive the award in person from Robin. He made it so particular to the museum and made us feel even prouder to be recipients of the award. It is so nice when people really understand all the hard work that goes into what we do’.
