Cumbria trainer James Moffatt aims for 50th win at Cartmel Racecourse during final meeting

Trainer James Moffatt is hoping to record a landmark 50th win at Cartmel Racecourse this weekend as the final meeting of the year gets underway.

Moffatt has so far ridden and trained 48 winners at the unique Cumbrian course throughout his career and was named champion trainer at the track over three consecutive years.

Now his Pitt Farm Stables is aiming six horses at the August meeting this Saturday, August 24 and Monday August 26 in a bid to land the two victories he needs to hit the benchmark figure.

“I’ve ridden or trained 48 winners at Cartmel in my career so it would be fantastic to make that 50 during these last two fixtures of 2019.

“We’ve had a good year so far and I’d say we’ve got a reasonable chance of getting the wins in. It’s certainly all to play for.

“We’re aiming six horses at Cartmel across Saturday and Monday so we’re looking forward to what could be an exciting weekend ahead.

“I’m lucky to have a fantastic team who work incredibly hard and supportive owners. None of this would be achievable without them.”

The August Bank Holiday meeting at Cartmel Racecourse is one of the most popular of the year.

And with temperatures expected to soar, the weekend is set to provide the perfect celebration of summer with seven thrilling races on each of the two days, entertainment for all ages and the chance to enjoy quality time with family and friends in a picturesque Cartmel valley.

Along with a range of food options, plenty of racegoers will opt to savour the warm August weather with a leisurely picnic on the course.

Geraldine McKay, Cartmel Racecourse manager, said the meeting was set to be a fantastic close to the 2019 racing season.

“There’s so much going on here at Cartmel for the August meeting, it’s one not to be missed.

“We’ve got a great weekend of racing lined up, particularly with the added excitement for everyone of James Moffatt targeting his 50th win on course.

“Even the weather looks set to be on our side, so we hope people will make the most of a perfect bank holiday weekend here at Cartmel.”
