“Business leaders can learn from Southgate” says human resources firm

Many of the challenges faced by this England team are echoed in day to day business and management life, according to human resources specialists Human Capital Department.

According to Peter Lawrence, Director of Human Capital Department, throughout their run to the semi finals it seemed that the players were calm and relaxed in pre-match interviews, and played an open attacking style which fans were not used to.

Peter Lawrence said: “We have been working with a number of small and medium-sized business leaders and managers recently, using our own management diagnostic tool, to assess and build managerial capability against recognised management competencies. We have definitely noticed similar challenges to that which the England team faced.”

It was reported that the England camp used a number of psychometric tests and assessments to help prepare the players and build mental toughness.

Peter added: “Our management diagnostic tool has been used by over 100,000 managers over twenty years. The assessment scores managers against 12 behavioural competencies and is linked to online learning materials. Crucially, you don’t need to be wearing a waistcoat to do it.”

The competencies include managing the job, building the team, relating to others, and thinking clearly.

Commenting on England’s future prospects Peter said: “Let’s hope England can continue to make progress in the years to come – Euro 2020, and Qatar 2022. A successful bid for 2030 would bring home advantage and might give us the edge – it’s coming home, but not yet!”
