Studio aims to help businesses recover from Covid-19 by enhancing high streets with artwork

Jager Studio has been exploring new ways to help people through the difficult times caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which can be applied to most industries throughout the UK.

High streets are now a mass of used vinyl, tape and safety signs, which doesn’t create a very welcoming feel, despite being safe. Believing that as a collective we have the ability to do better, Jager Studio started to consider using public art to encourage safe practices.

Director Anna Crane said, “We began looking for ways to introduce art back into space, that had a function not just form.” She continued, “our art practice was severely affected by COVID but we used this time to get creative.” This included coming up with a simple but effective idea to remove all the unattractive tape and poor-quality vinyl and replace them with fun and playful public artwork designed to enhance high streets.

According to Anna, “We wanted to find ways to help business owners like ourselves recover” and therefore “we wanted the trip to the local shop or café to feel a little more fun, so art seemed like a good fit.”

Safety measures such as social distancing are still able to operate, but Jager Studio is hopeful that the public will feel more inclined to go out and shop or eat at local businesses, allowing them to get back on their feet. People are now able to abide by safety measures such as queuing outside shops while admiring new artwork on display on streets. By utilising this method of placemaking, they intend to promote happiness, health and well-being.

Jager Studio has chosen four different types of artwork all with a ‘summer’ theme to demonstrate how the art might work as a safety measure in any street, while also noting that everything is adaptable to any unique environment.
