West London restaurant throws support behind World Health Day campaign

West London family-run eatery Jollof Mama is supporting this year’s World Health Day, and is urging others to do the same.

The restaurant, based in the capital’s Shepherd's Bush, brings the food and flavours of West Africa to its local area by showcasing some of Nigeria’s very finest dishes, such as jollof rice and spicy meat skewers, or suya, made with an aromatic seasoning. Dishes incorporate traditional ingredients combined with a contemporary twist.

Street food, a catering service and bespoke menus are all on offer, and Jollof Mama will also cater for specific dietary needs as required.

Now the restaurant is backing World Health Day on April 7, a WHO initiative which this year focuses on universal medical coverage for all as a human right.

“This is a cause close to our hearts,” explained the owner of Jollof Mama, Tieyan Eweka. “Our roots are in Africa, where some countries face major medical challenges with diseases such as malaria. Like the WHO, we believe everyone is entitled to the care they need, wherever they are.

“Clearly, as well, part of being healthy is healthy eating, which is what we aim to offer with our food. We think World Health Day is a good chance to showcase the importance of that aspect of health, too.”

Across the world, millions do not have any access to the medical care they need and may be forced to choose between health care and clothes, food and even housing.

World Health Day has been celebrated since 1950 and is marked by events globally, related to a particular theme.
