Sheila Says, The Mental Health Show Must Go On!

When your mental health theatre show is cancelled because of the pandemic, most entertainers would simply re-arrange for a future date – but counsellor and comedienne, Sheila McMahon has decided that simply isn’t an option….

Deciding that the subject matter, ANXIETY, is so important in these current times that the show needs to be performed regardless, she’s made the brave decision to run her show online, and perform it live, directly into people’s living rooms - whilst still supporting the arts by donating a percentage of profits from the ticket sales to charity, to support the original theatre venue.

Sheila McMahon, Qualified Counsellor RegMBACP, Comedienne and survivor of mental ill health was supposed to be performing her sell-out Mental Health Theatre Show at a local theatre. The date was carefully chosen, Saturday October 10th, to coincide with World Mental Health Day. But with the COVID restrictions still in place, a phone call with the theatre confirmed that performing there, on that date, wasn’t a feasible option.

When Sheila planned the show back in 2019 and decided to do her Autumn mental health show about anxiety, she had no idea how apt her chosen subject would be! Since March, we’ve all been living with the anxiety-ridden reality of coronavirus, which is eroding our emotional resilience as the threat of the pandemic continues on.

Sheila says: “Now, more than ever, people need help with anxiety. I simply couldn’t cancel a show that so many people could benefit from, so I had to find another way…”

As the business world has moved from in-person to online events, running meetings with virtual conference software, Sheila realised she could do the same with her show. As a result, the show will run at the same time, on the same date but be performed virtually, hosted over Zoom, so everyone can stay safe and still enjoy the fun.

The show is all about anxiety – what it is, and how to manage it. As well as talking about more general anxieties, Sheila will also share her thoughts about new anxieties related to the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Sheila will give us an insight into anxiety, teach us perspectives, coping mechanisms and tools to manage our state of minds.

In Sheila’s own unique style, she’ll have the audience laughing whilst learning, as part of her lifelong mission to reduce the stigma around mental health, and encourage more understanding.

Audiences have come to love the combination of humour, mental health education and a good ole sing along that ‘Sheila’s M.H.S’ mental health shows provide!

Whilst Sheila is extremely disappointed that this year's show cannot take place in a theatre, she will still be supporting the original theatre, which is a registered charity, by donating 10% of profits from this show.
