Wine bar experience leads to new business venture for local store owner

A visit to a wine bar in the German city of Hannover inspired businessman Cameron McKeown to set up his own version in north London.

But Oak N4 is not your average bar. Not only does it provide a highly personal service, but its range (with 30 wines available by the glass) is offered on rotation so that there’s always a new one to try.

Among the line-up are a number of organic and vegan vintages.

“We’re not about offering the most amazing wines, but about creating an experience, and about selling things consumers actually want to drink,” said McKeown. “And when we talk to our customers about wine, we do so in a very straight forward way. We love sharing our knowledge.”

McKeown came to Oak N4 with a number of years’ experience in the hospitality business, including running bars in Australia. He has completed wine education courses run by Sunday Brunch’s Raul Diaz.

Based in north London’s Wells Terrace, Oak N4 sells about 180 wines by the bottle, which can be enjoyed on site or taken away for drinking at home. The list is regularly updated and new vintages regularly added.

Visiting winemakers also offer frequent tastings, and there are live music sessions on Sundays.

Oak N4 sells olives, fresh bread, antipasti platters, mussels and sardines to accompany its wines.
