Why vegan choices don’t have to end even though Veganuary is over

January gave people the chance to try making the switch to a plant-based diet in the shape of Veganuary. But now that that’s over until next year, if you are keen to continue the vegan lifestyle, one local catering business is offering people the chance to do just that.

Oana’s is based at its family-friendly premises in Bridge Street in Cambridgeshire’s St Ives, and the business also runs a mobile cart. It serves coffees, shakes and cake, all 100% free from animal products.

Owner Dean Castel said: “We know that many people will have sampled and loved the vegan diet while doing Veganuary, for reasons ranging from the health and environmental benefits to animal welfare. For those who want to continue eating this way, we offer a great choice of on-the-go or coffee shop treats, and we're proof that a plant-based lifestyle doesn’t have to mean denying yourself the things you enjoy!”

The varied coffee menu includes a wide range of piping hot, comforting beverages, all made without milk, while the dairy-free Oreo milkshake is another favourite.

But perhaps Oana’s most-loved speciality, and its signature offering, is the chimney cake, a traditional dessert originating from Hungary. It’s a sweetbread, with a light, fluffy dough inside contrasting with the crunchy outside. Chimney cakes are cylindrical in shape, and the centre is hollow, so that, fresh from the oven, it looks like a hot chimney!

Castel concluded: “We’re looking forward to welcoming customers who’ve made the positive switch to veganism, as we move into Spring and beyond.”
