UK SME delivers three groundbreaking open digital projects to the NHS

As part of ongoing R&D towards best-practice technology delivery for the healthcare industry, Rugby-based Open Source solution provider OpusVL has delivered 3 mission-critical digital systems to NHS Trusts:

- An electronic patient observation app for South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust

- A time-based billing solution for NHS Digital

- An ERP system for Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust

These projects were delivered using the Open Digital Approach, an emerging model of software delivery that gives NHS organisations true independence from incumbent suppliers and offers autonomy over their digital systems.

Leading the two-year DITO (Develop In The Open) Project, funded by Innovate UK, OpusVL are the implementers of the Open Digital Approach.

To evidence their work, OpusVL will release three case studies, following the process from procurement, establishing the needs, through to delivery and ultimately, the outcome of the projects.

A critical part of the DITO Project, the Open eReact patient observation app, currently live at SLaM, is a critical tool for ensuring patient safety. This case study will follow the collaborative development of this application alongside SLaM and highlight its exponential growth during the project's duration.

A second case study will describe the creation of a usage and time-based billing solution to automate tri-party billing for NHS Digital. This now underpins the ‘GP IT Futures’ programme, invoicing 200 centrally-funded services from 70 suppliers to 7,500 GPs.

The final case study will focus on the integration of an Open Source ERP system for the Royal Marsden NHS Trust. This system joined-up every aspect of the trust's finance systems, enabling a centralised view of operations with unencumbered usage.

Despite the many challenges the past year has posed on the healthcare industry, the successful delivery of these mission-critical systems, achieved through the Open Digital Approach, is certainly a positive development for digital healthcare.
