Why we should support millennial entrepreneurship

Many young people have dreams and aspirations to start their own business but don’t follow through or even explore the viability of their idea. They continue to wonder ‘what if’ but generally don’t do much about it. If these people could be inspired to at least explore their idea, then we may just see some fascinating results.

Young people supply fresh ideas, imagination and new ways of thinking which all combine to create innovation. This is a key ingredient to longevity and continued interest. We only need to look at the likes of Apple, Google and Amazon to see this in action. Something as simple as a coffee shop can be transformed into a spectacular experience if imagination is encouraged to flourish.

Encouraging young people to explore entrepreneurship is potentially creating wealth, jobs and new opportunities, all of which are beneficial to our economy. We need to invest in young people and say, “okay”, “let’s see what you’ve got”.

It’s crucial that young people are not discouraged to explore their inner entrepreneur. Luckily, we live in an age where the internet can provide theory, instruction and learning but what it can’t effectively offer is one-on-one personal interaction. Just talking out loud, face-to-face, to another person is a very effective method of analysing an idea or problem.

It isn’t just about listening at the start of the journey either. It’s easy for anyone to lose focus and get disheartened. Setting up a new venture certainly isn’t easy. So many unexpected outcomes can occur giving way to the dreaded “oh, I give up”. We need to be looking at what support is currently available and easily accessible. Is it used? If not, why not? is it available when required? A young entrepreneur might be working full time as well as working on their venture on evenings and weekends. It’s no good just having advice available for a few hours in the middle of a week day.

Successful entrepreneurship does take a little bit of luck and timing. For example, the motivational kick can come from anywhere, at any time. For Plutobury Clothing it came randomly one evening from an unexpected personal encounter. If it wasn’t for this, Plutobury would still be submerged in a state of disheartenment.

Once thoroughly researched, Ideas and aspirations need to be validated. The idea of Plutobury Clothing was validated when ‘The Start Up Loans Company’ assessed and advised on the business plan and agreed to back the business. It was this, along with monthly mentoring, that really pushed Plutobury to the next level.

Young people can do the same. They just need to know that anything is possible. What’s better; to regret not doing something, or, having a go and seeing how it turns out?
