Local cleaning company sweeps to success

More than 23 years after its launch, a local cleaning business continues to reach new heights. Poppies Peak District, managed by husband and wife team, Charles and Christine Kirkman, is celebrating after reaching an impressive milestone; now delivering over 1,300 hours to clients in the area. The pair opened their business back in 1997 having tired of the stresses of corporate life – and they haven’t looked back since.

The duo first discovered Poppies whilst working at the Sheffield branch of Lloyds Bank. In their roles as business managers, they supported fellow entrepreneur, Nigel Bayliss, on his journey to launching his own Poppies business in the area. Charles and Christine followed Nigel’s success with interest before realising that the opportunity was exactly what their local area needed too. Today, they employ a team of almost 30 cleaners who provide cleaning support to over 130 clients in the area.

“We were lucky in that we could see the real success of the business and wanted our local area to benefit from the exceptional service,” said Charles. “Poppies is different to any other cleaning service that I’ve ever come across as we place our cleaners at the centre of our company. We believe that a happy cleaner is a good cleaner and that’s what really makes the business shine.”

“To reach this milestone is great achievement. We’re so proud our team, this wouldn’t have been possible without them. Supporting our clients year after year is something that we’re incredibly passionate about and we hope to continue for the next 20 years too! It’s hard work but we absolutely love what we do.”

Charles and Christine still work closely with their team, managing the everyday operations of the business. From basic housekeeping and laundry to party clear-ups, spring cleans and house-move assistance, Poppies provide an all-rounded service for clients. The business recently moved to stunning new offices in the picturesque Peak District National Park. They’re now fully settled in and prepared for the festive season!

“As we head towards the festive period and Christmas party season begins, things get really busy. Whether it’s cleaning up after the office party or getting your home ready for when the in-laws turn up, we help people focus on making the most of their time with friends, family and loved ones.

Charles remembers that the leap into business ownership was originally about escaping the rat-race and spending more time with their children. However, two decades on, the business has evolved with the dynamic duo, who now enjoy a whole new lease of life.

“When the children were little, we could spend more time with them and be present at any school functions. Whether it was a play, sports day or parents’ evening, we were there. But now they’ve both grown up and have their own lives, we’re able to enjoy our time together as a couple. Whilst I enjoy the odd spot of golf, we can both go on walks in a part of the world that has been our home for so long. The Peak District certainly has a special place in our hearts.”
