Coronavirus forces need for more English speaking teachers

Online English teaching is booming. With public and private schools in lockdown around the world, the demand for learning the English language is insatiable. It stands to reason that the needs for native English speakers to teach their own language has risen by 80%.

According to the British Council the number of English language learners across the world is always growing with the current level being around 1.5 billion. The number of native English speakers, however, is put at about 340 million. There has always been a major gap between those that have and those that want. This is now being filled by online English language learning.

This is just the beginning of the high growth in this mushrooming market. The online language learning industry growth is expected to accelerate over the next five years, driven by flexibility and cost benefits of online learning of languages.

According to Premier TEFL - one of Europe’s largest trainers of teachers of TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) there has been a 95% increase in those taking a course in how to teach English who want to work from home. They want to become a virtual tutor instead of travelling abroad. Rosie Mansfield, MD states that the change of career direction from many people since the start of the Pandemic has been understandable. She says “Dozens of online language learning platforms are hiring up to 1000 new teachers monthly to keep up with student demand and new teachers can earn anything from $10-30 an hour”

According to Mansfield, “Many students want to learn conversational English which means that online teaching is much easier than people fear. Barriers to entry are low with just a stable internet connection and knowledge of how to share the language you speak every day”.

Could this be the start of the largest GIG economy of all? At the current rate, very probably.
