Real Life Press seeks writers looking to profit from their expertise

It’s every budding writer’s dream come true: being paid to write about their experience. Real Life Press is now offering that opportunity to writers across the UK in their search for writing that combines expert knowledge with great stories behind them.

The resulting pieces will be featured in a series of books called Expertise With Anecdotes, which will see ordinary people share their expert knowledge on any subject.

The company is open to submissions on any theme, from builders to cooks, gardeners to debt collectors. The aim is to get insight into all manner of practical topics straight from the people who are passionate about them.

Speaking about the project, Roy Chadwick, company spokesperson for Real Life Press, said: “We pride ourselves on being the voice of ordinary people so if you have a hobby that is out of fashion, for instance erecting ships in bottles, we want you to tell us how it’s done, before the craft is lost. If your grandmother’s recipe for slow-roasting lamb with a special combination of spices is second to none, tell us about it.”

The company is not particular about the kinds of experience documented, stating that the stories can be about a routine way of doing things or what happens when you break the mould. Stories of trial and error that lead to optimum solutions are just as important as expertise developed.

Submissions don't need to be in standard article format either. They could simply be written up as a list of processes or a fact sheet about the standards of best practice for those in science, technology or related fields. The only restrictions are that articles should be between 250 and 1500 words.

It is hoped the anthologies will provide inspiration and factual knowledge to the publishing company's fiction writers to help them add convincing detail to their narratives.

“We are a not-for-profit community of readers and writers, and our writers of fiction know they need to add authenticity when they have no direct knowledge”. Roy continued, “How does a bailiff or a debt collector actually operate? Does their attitude change if they have bought bad debt cheaply? Will the procedure for a pre-op assessment be the basis of a good dramatic scene and a way of exploring a backstory? How exactly can time of death be calculated? A private eye is following someone visiting his home town. In which locations in an actual town would he have the chance to overhear a conversation?”
