Celebrate World Art Day by trying something new!

World Art Day is on April 15, and one Norwich artist is urging people to mark the occasion by trying something new, such as working with pottery and clay.

Richard Wilks runs Courses and Clay from Scottow, 10 miles from the city centre. The groups are inclusive of all ages and abilities, and classes never have more than six students.

Richard says: “World Art Day could offer the perfect opportunity to have a go at something a little bit different.”

He offers pottery and sculpture sessions, with wheel-throwing an option for those who can work on their own. With sculpture, students are taught how to make cast-stone forms, which could be ideal for the garden.

Residential and private tuition options are also on offer, including a four-day intensive modelling and casting course. For those wanting to learn how to throw pots on an electric wheel, a two-and-a-half-hour private class is recommended.

Meanwhile, taster sessions allow a chance to try out working in clay before committing to a full course. During these classes, each student produces 2 hand built and one wheel thrown item. These taster sessions, which are available on weekends and occasionally on weekdays by appointment, cost £30. Taster sessions aimed at parents and children are held during school holidays.

“We can’t all be geniuses, but we can all create something amazing,” adds Richard. “I can offer the tools for inspiration in creating sculpture and pottery, and provide classes and space in the studio for anyone wanting to develop their craft.”

World Art Day is a global celebration of fine arts and was established by the International Association of Art in 2012 to promote worldwide awareness of creative endeavour.
