A new sailing course that takes sailors across the Bay of Biscay

Traditionally, sailing courses are run in sheltered waters such as the Solent or off the west coast of Scotland. But how about jumping on a course that takes you across the English Channel, through the Channel Islands and then across the Bay of Biscay, one of the most famous and feared stretches of water in western Europe? Bruce Jacobs, one of the directors of Rubicon 3 says "We developed our Passage Making Masterclass four years ago to help new and developing skippers bridge the gap between qualifications and real world skills and experience. The demand for the course has been huge from day one - it really highlighted to us that while the RYA qualifications from Day Skipper through to Yachtmaster may be great ways to start sailing, they don't require you to have sailed any distance offshore, or to have tackled international sailing. This can leave many newly qualified sailors feeling very raw and nervous to broaden their cruising range". The bespoke course run by Rubicon 3 is specifically focused on real world skills rather than manufactured exercises and every day, the candidates on board will be working with tides, commercial traffic, choosing anchorages, entering ports and generally getting to grips with all the skills a skipper actually needs. Rachael Sprot, Jacobs's co-director said "We ran this course in the English Channel to start with, then expanded it to Norway by popular demand. Extending it to the Bay of Biscay is really exciting. This is an infamous stretch of water but actually one of the most enchanting cruising grounds possible."

The course starts on October 13th 2018 from the Solent and finishes 15 days later in Coruna, Spain on October 27th

Candidates must have RYA Day Skipper (or international equivalent) to sign up

About Rubicon 3

Ever dreamt of sailing to the icebergs of Spitsbergen or maybe across the Atlantic Ocean to Cuba - but felt it was way out of your league? Rubicon 3 was set up to open up adventure sailing to everyone. We focus on amazing sailing routes; providing top class instruction so that everyone is fully involved and learns; and having time in the schedule to go ashore and explore these incredible places. In our first five years we have taken 75 year olds to the arctic circle and 18 year olds across the Atlantic. Want to sail to Iceland, Belize, Norway, Cuba? If it sounds amazing, we go there. No previous sailing experience is required to join and we are particularly suited to those coming alone. There is nearly always a 50:50 male to female crew ratio and the crew get fully involved from the very start with top quality instruction.
