Autumn Season announced: Discover exciting Contemporary Painters at Sarah Wiseman Gallery

Gallery director Sarah Wiseman invites you to discover the very best of contemporary painters in the Autumn Season announced at her contemporary gallery in Oxford.

In September, the acclaimed still-life painter Sarah Spackman will present her hugely anticipated solo exhibition ‘Drawing in Colour.’

‘We’re delighted to launch our Autumn Season with an exciting new solo exhibition from one of our most sought-after artists’, says gallery director Sarah Wiseman. However, she urges collectors not to delay: ‘Sarah’s previous solo show back in 2019 was a near sell-out, so we are preparing for an especially busy month ahead!’

Then in October, ‘Wild Tracks’ by Jim Whitty is a display of large-scale, intensely colourful landscapes. ‘These two exhibitions are linked by the use of colour: each artist has used colour in really exciting, and sometimes unexpected ways.’

Jim’s paintings are inspired by water and trees and the myths with which they are associated. He says ‘When sunlight scatters and sparkles across water, or dances through new green leaves, it can lift the soul… These are the fleeting moments I chase.’

‘Wild Tracks’ will also feature stunning sculptural works by glass artist Michèle Oberdieck.

Sarah Wiseman Gallery will prepare fully illustrated e-catalogues for each of the exhibitions. There you can preview works and read more about the artists. To request a link, please contact the gallery on info@wisegal.com

Notes to Editors

Notes for editors:

Sarah Spackman trained at Byam Shaw School of Art, London, and graduated from Camberwell School of art in 1981. She was elected as a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 2019, and a member of the Small Paintings Group in 2021.

Sarah's work is in many private collections world-wide as well as the collection of the Allied Irish Bank. Her work has also been selected for the Jerwood Drawing Competition, the New English Art Club, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Discerning Eye Exhibitions. Sarah exhibits regularly with Sarah Wiseman Gallery in Oxford, and in other galleries around the UK.

Jim Whitty
Jim Whitty’s work is unusual in its approach to English landscape. Distinct by its saturated colour, Jim favours precise brushwork and flat-planes to describe the woodland and waterways that surround his home. He likes to work in large scale, offering the viewer an immersive experience, the landscape appearing to encircle them.
The atmosphere in each of the works is brooding, almost bringing out a sense of strangeness and mystery, whilst his use of colour is unromanticised, capturing nature’s intensity.

Jim Whitty, now based in Somerset, studied at Brighton and Glasgow School of Art, and has exhibited around the UK, included at the London Art Fair, Cadogan Contemporary, and Adam Gallery in Bath. He has works in the permanent collections of the Paisley Art Institute, and numerous other private collections.

Michèle Oberdieck
Also a Glasgow School of Art graduate, Michèle Oberdieck specialises in glassworks inspired by natural forms and organic structures, exploring balance and asymmetry through shape, surface and colour. Using sculptural forms as a gesture, or expressive mark, often combining a few pieces together, a narrative is created.
Her ‘Air Apparent’ series explores the luminosity of colours found in a dusk sky. She says, ‘I find the sky, as day turn to dusk with the pivotal light from the sun or moon glowing through layers of folded clouds utterly captivating.’
Michèle’s work has appeared in numerous major design exhibitions including Venice Glass Week, Paris Design Week, Maison Objet, Paris, Ireland Glass Biennial and Decorex International, London.
