Costa Shortlisted Author Launches New Novel, The Mothers: A Thrilling Rollercoaster Womance

'The Mothers' by Costa shortlisted novelist, Sarah J Naughton is published by Trapeze books on January 9th 2020.

Naughton's new novel is her third for adults and focuses on five women who meet at their local antenatal group. The only thing they really have in common is that they are all pregnant and live within the Chelsea area. Three years later, they all still appear good friends but the cracks are beginning to show. When Bella’s husband goes missing the same night as one of their 'Mother’s Club' get-togethers, the police come knocking. Each of the women has secrets they’d like to hide. Yet secrets always find a way of resurfacing.

The inspiration for her latest novel drew on her experiences of mum friendships and the harsh realities of them. Sarah said, “You only need to look at the papers, gleefully dissecting the latest WAG bust-up between Colleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy to see that female friendships are, let’s say, complex. Add children into the mix, and you have a recipe for disaster. It is a lucky woman whose female friendships last a lifetime, and even luckier if you have a friend who is actually prepared to sacrifice something for you.

The Mothers is my homage to that kind of idealized female friendship: the one we are promised in films and Facebook stories. Loyal, self-sacrificing, fun, enduring. But the truth is, just as often, mum friendships share other thriller characteristics – full of twists and turns and ending in a bloodbath.”

Grazia’s Rebecca Reid has described The Mothers as, “ gripping tense, taut and brilliant. You will be begging your friends to read it so you can discuss it over and over again!”

Novelist, Sharon Bolton, described 'The Mothers' as, "Original and stylish. The Mothers will keep you guessing until the last page."
