The Cutting Edge of Mental Health - The Burnt Chef Project X Savernake Knives

The Burnt Chef Project and British knifemaker Savernake Knives have partnered to create a limited edition Burnt Chef Project X Savernake custom knife, with 10% of all proceeds going direct to The Burnt Chef Project’s campaign to eradicate the stigma around mental health within the hospitality industry.

The hand-made Burnt Chef knife, which draws inspiration from a Japanese Gyuto - renowned for its precision slicing capabilities - sports a 9” concave blade and striking white on black resin handle illustrative of the Burnt Chef’s brain logo. It’s a beautifully balanced, clean and refined knife designed to appeal to professional chefs and home cooks alike.

Just 80 individually numbered knives will be produced – representing the 80% of professionals within the hospitality industry who, in a recent survey by The Burnt Chef Project* reported having experienced at least one instance of poor mental health, such as anxiety or depression, as a result of their role within the trade.

The Burnt Chef Project’s Founder, Kris Hall, explains:

"The Burnt Chef Project is a non-profit campaign operating within hospitality to challenge mental health stigma through online training, open conversations and sales of branded custom merchandise. We are committed to burning the stigma of mental health through information and education across the 3.2 million people that work within hospitality in the UK.

It's our continued focus to work with hospitality businesses and staff to improve working conditions through education. Work will also be needed to review internal health and safety and mental health policies that will ultimately lead to a reduction in stress and decreased risk of poor mental health.”

Laurie Timpson, Savernake’s Founder commented:

“We hope that our collaboration with The Burnt Chef Project will help enable the conversation around mental health to reach more areas of the trade and raise awareness of the impact of mental health issues within the industry to the wider public. By purchasing a Burnt Chef knife from Savernake, industry professionals and passionate home cooks are directly supporting the Project’s ongoing work, whilst also gaining pleasure from owning one of our custom designed, limited edition knives.”

The Burnt Chef knife goes on sale from Monday 18th May and is available to purchase directly from Savernake Knives with a link to the knife available from the Burnt Chef Project website.

The Burnt Chef Project

The Burnt Chef Project is a UK based non-profit business that has dedicated its business goals to social change. Its company mission is to de-stigmatise mental health within the trade whilst educating hospitality employers and employees in ways to reduce stress and improve mental health.

The Burnt Chef Project was founded in May 2019 by Kris Hall, who has had 9 years of experience within the industry through food photography and wholesale supply. In a recent survey of 1,273 people, 86% of respondents said that they thought The Burnt Chef Project would make a noticeable impact in de-stigmatising mental health within hospitality.

Whilst the UK market has responded well to the aims of the business, we have found engagement has grown worldwide including in countries like Australia, Japan, Canada and across Europe.

Wiltshire-based knifemaker Savernake has been crafting customisable and bespoke kitchen knives since 2016. Founder Laurie Timpson and his team now supply knives to professional chefs and amateur cooks globally. In tests by CATRA (the Cutlery and Allied Trades Research Association) Savernake blades scored in the top 2.5% of knives tested and were rated ‘Excellent’ for both sharpness and durability.

Knives are crafted using state of the art engineering and time-honoured hand techniques, with each knife taking 50 plus hours to create. The signature concave blade geometry results in knives that cut better, weigh less and sharpen more easily.

Previous hospitality industry collaboration partners include Michelin-starred chefs Tom Aikens, Mark Sargeant and Daniel Galmiche, whilst collaborations with G.F Smith and leading design duo 2LG Studios have resulted in paper and recycled materials being used to create colourful knife handles and chopping boards.

Notes on The Burnt Chef knife (RRP £350)

Drawing inspiration from a classic Gyuto, the limited edition Burnt Chef knife has a longer 9" blade with a very subtle rock, a good hilt stop and a really nice slicing action. It sports a striking black and white resin handle illustrative of the Burnt Chef brain logo and is a beautifully balanced, clean and refined knife designed to appeal to professional chefs and home cooks alike.
