Innovative community arts organisation SET, opens new site in Lewisham

SET has announced the impending launch of a new local arts centre in Lewisham, South London.

The charity is founded on the ethos of revitalising the high streets of the capital, by taking on buildings which would otherwise be unoccupied.

The rise of this locally-focused arts movement has been concurrent with big high street retail brands falling into administration, leaving large spaces empty which threaten to be a blight on the surrounding area. SET Lewisham has followed this format, launching in a building which was previously occupied by Mothercare.

Local artists now have an affordable location to work and become a part of SET’s public programme. SET Lewisham will be used for live performances, talks and workshops. Since opening, SET Dalston has become a thriving hub for the arts, hosting everything from exciting contemporary electronic music to art exhibitions, and now SET Lewisham will provide a similar creative platform for the local community.

Roland Fischer-Vousden, Executive of SET Centre CIO, said: "We are pleased to be able to offer some of the most affordable new artists’ workspaces in London at £1.2 psf per calendar month, including all bills and internet. Following on from our previous SET centres in Westminster and Poplar, and co-existing with our current sites in Dalston and Bermondsey, SET Lewisham has the ability to become a real asset for the local community – over 80% of those who are offered workspace will either live or work in Lewisham. Those who take on workspace become Associate Members of SET and co-curate our programme, meaning we are involving local people in the conception, development and delivery of our projects. We encourage all interested artists to check out the space, which are available from now, ranging in size from smaller shared spaces to over 1,000 sq ft.”

SET members, of whom there are already over 500, are invited to participate in the public programme which SET runs, in turn creating the strong community which defines the ethos of SET.
