Southwark Planning Committee approves major Old Kent Road Devonshire Square development
Shaw Corporation acting as strategic advisors on behalf of Barkwest Limited (part of David Pearl’s Structadene group of companies) is delighted to report that it has secured a unanimous resolution to grant planning permission for the Devonshire Square development at the London Borough of Southwark’s virtual Planning Committee on Monday 01 June 2020. The scheme is for a new development of up to 565 new homes and over 4,700 sqm of employment floorspace on the Old Kent Road opposite a planned new Bakerloo Line station to be located on the former Toys R’US site.
The Committee resolution is the result of over four years work in close partnership with the London Borough of Southwark and the local community to bring forward a development on this site. Shaw Corporation, working with DP9, Allies and Morrison, Thorncliffe and a wider team were commended by local residents, Tenants and Residents Associations and businesses.
The new development will act as a catalyst for the regeneration of this part of the Old Kent Road Opportunity Area by providing the first significant new public open space for local residents to enjoy and new road and transport infrastructure upgrades. The scheme will provide up to 565 new homes including 41% affordable housing, equating to approximately 230 new affordable social rent and shared ownership homes. The proposals also include over 4,700 sqm new employment floorspace, including B1c floorspace, recreating a high street onto Old Kent Road, creating hundreds of new jobs, and providing shops and amenities for local residents.
The Council’s Officers and Planning Committee commended the development for its exemplary design, public open space and approach to public consultation.
Shaw Corporation is leading the discussions with Registered Providers and partners to deliver the development.
The development is programmed to start in 2021.
