Are these awards the most diverse ever?

The Awards season is in full swing. We’ve seen nominations for the BAFTAs and the Oscars both being dubbed the most diverse ever.

Following major criticisms last year on their lack of diversity, this year sees the most diverse list of nominations ever. Frances-Anne Solomon is one of an elite group of voting members of the Directors Branch of the Academy and she’s available to give her insight .

As a voting member of the Directors Branch of the Academy, Solomon is among a select group of non-white Academy members whose being able to influence the final list and eventual selection of the winners for arguably the biggest one of the year, The Oscars Award Ceremony on 25th April.

“I am truly honoured to be part of the transformation process currently underway at the Academy to ensure representation from the best global voices in film.” Said: Frances-Ann.

Representation on all these selection bodies continue to be a major subject of debate as mentioned at the recent Golden Globes where the lack of Black judges was highlighted as one of the reasons why there have been so few none-white nominees at these ceremonies in the past. The same could be argued as to why, up to now, women have been so poorly reflected.

Notes to Editors

Frances-Anne Solomon was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in July of 2019 after the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite brought attention to the make-up of the membership and lack of recognition for racialized films and actors. It was the start of a focused effort to diversify The Academy and the Oscar awards.

Solomon is the recipient of several prestigious international awards. In addition to being a Director Member of the Academy, she now serves on the Executive Committee of the Directors Branch, deciding nominations of future members.
